The retreat is themed “Transforming Polytechnic Education in Nigeria: Innovation, Good Governance and Sustainability for National Development.” It comes at a time when the sector faces challenges including limited funding, ageing infrastructure, evolving industry needs, governance gaps, and the urgent need for sustainable operations.
The Chairman also highlighted recurring tensions in some institutions. These often arise between Governing Councils and Management or between Management and staff unions such as ASUP, SSANIP, and NASU. Conflicts over policy interpretation, resource allocation, administrative boundaries, and staff welfare can disrupt institutional harmony and delay progress.
He called on all participants, including Governing Council Chairmen, Commissioners, Rectors, Registrars, and Bursars, to engage in open and honest dialogue, share best practices, and develop actionable strategies.
This retreat provides a platform to explore innovative approaches to curriculum development, research, and industry partnerships, strengthen good governance and ethical leadership, develop strategies for financial sustainability, and resolve conflicts through mutual understanding and collaboration.

The Chairman said the transformation being sought is not just institutional but national. He added that a vibrant Polytechnic sector would empower young people, boost local content in industry, promote self-reliance, and contribute to Nigeria’s emergence as a technological and economic powerhouse.
By coming together, stakeholders have the opportunity to build trust, strengthen cooperation, and ensure smoother operations in the institutions they lead. Participants are expected to translate discussions into concrete actions that will promote peace, stability, and excellence across Nigerian Polytechnics.
The retreat is expected to run for several days with delegates discussing strategies to enhance innovation, governance, and sustainability in Nigeria’s Polytechnic education system.
