Eko Hot Blog reports that the sensitization exercise, themed “Safe Water, Sanitation and Hygiene,” brought together community leaders, borehole drillers, water vendors including sachet and bottled water producers, tanker operators, and other stakeholders to address growing concerns around water safety amid rapid urbanization and increasing reliance on alternative water sources in the area.
Welcoming participants, the Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government and Chairman, Conference 57 League of Chairmen, Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, stressed the urgent need for proper regulation of water consumption in the council area.
He described water as life itself and noted that ensuring the safety of what residents consume is critical to public health.
Hon. Olowa commended Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Aduragbemi Sanwo-Olu, for prioritizing water safety across the state and urged stakeholders to pay close attention to discussions and guidelines provided during the engagement.
In her address, the Executive Secretary of LASWARCO, Mrs. Oluwabukola Khadijah Adeyemo, explained that despite Lagos being surrounded by water, much of it is unsafe for direct consumption due to factors such as contamination, saltwater intrusion, heavy metals, and poor handling practices.
She warned that indiscriminate drilling of boreholes, especially near septic tanks and soak-aways, exposes communities to serious waterborne diseases including cholera, typhoid fever, and diarrhoea.
“This programme marks our commitment to bridging the gap between awareness and compliance in fast-growing areas like Ibeju-Lekki,” Mrs. Adeyemo said. “Safe water is life, but poorly managed water can become a silent threat to public health and the environment.”
Key highlights of the sensitization included emphasis on proper household water treatment, safe storage, improved hygiene practices, and the need for collaboration between regulators, service providers, and communities to achieve sustainable access to potable water.
The event also attracted several dignitaries, including the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Water Corporation, Hon. Bode Olaniyan; Mr. Idowu Olowu; Mr. Lanre Owofuro; Mrs. Ayodeji Abe; the Lagos State Health District III Director, Mrs. Mary Akinola; past serving supervisors of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government; and the CDC Chairman, Comrade Jabita Adebola, among others.
The sensitization programme reaffirmed LASWARCO’s commitment to safeguarding public health through effective regulation, community engagement, and the promotion of safe and sustainable water practices across Lagos State.
