Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwo has opened up about her early journey into marriage, revealing that she was married off at the age of 19 through a family arrangement rather than personal choice.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the respected screen icon shared the personal account while reflecting on marriage, family, and changing societal values, explaining that the decision to marry at such a young age was made by her parents, not by her.

Ozokwo admitted that the experience was frightening at first, as she struggled to understand how to build love with a man she did not choose for herself.

However, she noted that with patience and time, affection gradually developed, strengthening their bond.
She disclosed that the marriage lasted 23 years, during which her husband battled a prolonged illness for about 15 years before his death in 2000.
According to the actress, their union produced three biological children, while she later adopted five more. One of the adopted children later passed away, leaving her with seven children.
Following her husband’s death, Ozokwo said she chose not to remarry, instead dedicating herself fully to raising her children and holding the family together.
Reflecting on modern relationships, the veteran actress observed that despite increased self-awareness and personal development today, many marriages still struggle to survive.

She contrasted this with earlier times, when parent-arranged marriages were sustained through patience, responsibility, and endurance.
Ozokwo added that she deliberately instilled strong moral values in her children, teaching her daughters respect and her sons responsibility, lessons she believes helped her family withstand difficult moments.
She said she consistently advises her children to avoid divorce and to build their homes on love, respect, sacrifice, and commitment, stressing that these principles were key to maintaining stability through hardship.
