He is expected to be replaced by Tunji Disu, who currently serves as the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Annex in Lagos.

Egbetokun was appointed as the 22nd indigenous Inspector General of Police on June 19, 2023. His appointment was later confirmed by the Police Council on October 31 of the same year.
Although he was initially due for retirement on September 4, 2024, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 60, the National Assembly amended the Police Act, allowing him to complete a full four-year tenure unless removed by the President.
With that amendment, he was expected to remain in office until October 31, 2027. However, his resignation has now brought his tenure to an earlier end.
Further official details regarding the transition are expected in the coming days.
