Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), his media aide, Nuhu Anka, confirmed on Monday.
According to Anka, Eko Hot Blog gathered that the defection follows extensive consultations with political leaders, elders, and supporters across Zamfara State.

The move, he explained, is aimed at promoting stability, progress, and sustainable development in the state.
“After careful consideration and in the interest of Zamfara State’s growth, Governor Dauda Lawal has decided to formally leave the PDP and join the APC,” the statement read.

The decision, Anka noted, was influenced by ongoing internal challenges within the PDP at both national and state levels, including leadership disputes and unresolved structural issues that, he said, risked undermining governance and service delivery.
He added that the governor remains committed to addressing the security and development needs of Zamfara and saw aligning with the APC as a path to greater unity, stability, and collaboration with the Federal Government.

The final decision was taken at a meeting in the Government House in Gusau with top state officials, key political stakeholders, and the Deputy Governor.
Anka also said Lawal expressed gratitude to PDP members for their support over the years while stressing that current political circumstances made the switch necessary.
“By joining the APC, the governor reaffirms his commitment to strengthening unity, improving security, accelerating development, and ensuring Zamfara State benefits from stronger collaboration with the Federal Government,” the aide said.

PUNCH Online notes that Lawal is among the governors expected to seek re-election in the 2027 general elections.
His move comes shortly after a Court of Appeal ruling that barred INEC from recognising the outcome of the PDP national convention held in Ibadan, increasing the number of APC governors nationwide to 31.
