The President described Nwosu as a highly talented player whose creativity and skill left a lasting imprint on Nigerian football.
The statement also highlighted the late midfielder’s early achievements with the national team, particularly his role as a 17-year-old member of the then Green Eagles squad that won the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations.
Tinubu noted that Nwosu served the country with distinction for more than a decade, representing Nigeria in several major tournaments, including the Africa Cup of Nations editions in 1982, 1984 and 1988.

Nwosu’s death was earlier announced by his former teammate and fellow 1980 AFCON winner, Segun Odegbami, who disclosed that the ex-international died at about 4:00 a.m. at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital after spending five days in intensive care.
