The Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to Nigeria, Mehmet Poroy, has called for stronger efforts to boost trade between Nigeria and Türkiye to $5 billion, noting that current figures fall short of the countries’ true potential, Eko Hot Blog reports.
Speaking during an official visit to Kaduna, the envoy met with officials of the Kaduna Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, where he stressed the need for deeper economic collaboration.

Poroy revealed that bilateral trade currently stands at about $2 billion, while Turkish investments in Nigeria are valued at roughly $400 million. He noted that, given Nigeria’s economic strength, these figures do not fully reflect the opportunities available.
According to him, the visit aligns with renewed directives from Türkiye’s leadership to strengthen ties with Nigeria, following recent high-level engagements between both countries.

Describing his meeting with KADCCIMA as productive, the ambassador said it sets the stage for more focused discussions across key sectors. He emphasised the importance of collaboration between government institutions and the private sector in driving economic growth.
Poroy also highlighted the role of chambers of commerce in connecting businesses, adding that initiatives such as trade fairs, business delegations, and bilateral meetings would be used to expand cooperation.
He disclosed that a Joint Economic Trade Commission has been put in place to track progress, address challenges, and propose solutions on a yearly basis.
To further ease business interactions, the ambassador assured Nigerian investors of improved visa processes, stating that business visas to Türkiye can now be obtained within a few days.
President of KADCCIMA, Farouk Suleiman, described the visit as historic, noting it is the first of its kind in over 15 years. He highlighted Kaduna’s strong potential in industry and agriculture, backed by infrastructure and a large population.
Suleiman called for partnerships in manufacturing, trade facilitation, skills development, and the revitalisation of the Kaduna International Trade Fair complex.
Also speaking, Chairman of the Nigerian–Türkiye Business Council, Dele Oye, said efforts are underway to deepen trade relations and attract investment to Kaduna.
He revealed plans for a memorandum of understanding aimed at easing business operations and encouraging more trade exchanges between both countries. He added that Kaduna’s strengths in agriculture, livestock, and its youthful population present significant opportunities for economic growth through bilateral cooperation.
