The Premier League will have at least five teams in next season’s UEFA Champions League after securing a European Performance Spot for the second consecutive year.
The additional slot was confirmed on Tuesday night when Arsenal FC defeated Sporting CP 1-0 in the first leg of their quarter-final clash, boosting England’s position in UEFA’s coefficient rankings.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that UEFA allocates the extra place to the two leagues with the best overall performance across its three club competitions. English clubs have dominated the standings for most of the campaign, with all nine representatives progressing to the round of 16.
Strong results during the league phase ensured England maintained a clear lead, meaning a fifth-place finish in the Premier League will now guarantee qualification for the Champions League. Newcastle United FC benefited from a similar arrangement last season.
Spain are currently favourites to claim the second extra slot, although Germany and Portugal remain in contention. The Bundesliga kept its hopes alive after Bayern Munich defeated Real Madrid 2-1, while SC Freiburg are set to face Celta Vigo in the Europa League.
The race for fifth place in England remains tightly contested. Liverpool FC lead with 49 points, closely followed by Chelsea FC on 48. Brentford FC and Everton FC are on 46 points, while Fulham FC have 44. Brighton & Hove Albion FC and Sunderland AFC sit on 43 points, with AFC Bournemouth just behind. Only seven points separate fifth from 13th position.
More qualification spots could still be created. Aston Villa FC could secure a sixth Champions League place for England if they win the Europa League and finish outside the top four.
A similar scenario applies to Liverpool, who are set to face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarter-finals. If two English clubs win European trophies while finishing fifth and sixth, a seventh-place team could also qualify.

There is also a pathway through the Europa League, with Nottingham Forest FC capable of following the example of Tottenham Hotspur FC by winning the competition from mid-table and increasing England’s representation in the Champions League.
