According to the Nigerian Army, the operation was carried out based on credible intelligence linking the group to an earlier attack in Okuku-Igbo, Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State, where a police officer was killed and another injured.
During the February 26 attack, the assailants reportedly made away with two AK-47 rifles before fleeing the scene.

Military authorities said the suspects later relocated to Ebonyi State in a bid to evade arrest and set up a new operational base.
Acting on actionable intelligence, troops stormed the hideout and arrested five suspects, including the alleged commander.
Items recovered from them include mobile phones, keys, and a motorcycle believed to have been used for their operations.
The suspects are currently in custody and undergoing investigation, as security agencies intensify efforts to dismantle the network and recover additional weapons.
