Mali has been rocked by a major wave of violence that claimed the life of its defence minister, Sadio Camara, following coordinated attacks by armed groups across the country.

According to an official statement, gunmen and a suicide bomber targeted his home, leading to a fierce exchange of fire in which he was wounded before later dying in hospital.

The attacks, described as one of the most significant in recent times, struck the capital Bamako as well as several other towns and military installations.
Government officials said the violence has since subsided, although uncertainties remain over control of some areas, particularly in the north.
