Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has urged the Federal Government to implement urgent wage adjustments and pursue wider economic reforms, warning that the current economic climate is eroding the value of workers’ earnings and worsening living conditions.
In a message commemorating Workers’ Day shared on Friday, Eko Hot Blog gathered that Obi commended Nigerian workers across different sectors, describing them as the foundation of the nation’s survival and progress.

He noted that despite persistent economic challenges, workers continue to support families, sustain institutions, and keep the economy running, often under difficult and uncertain conditions.

Obi expressed concern over the declining purchasing power of wages, pointing out that rising inflation, increasing food prices, and higher transportation costs have significantly reduced the real value of income.
According to him, it is troubling that many Nigerians who contribute daily to essential services—including education, healthcare, agriculture, security, and transportation—are not adequately compensated for their efforts.
He stressed that the current minimum wage is no longer sufficient to guarantee even a basic standard of living, as economic pressures continue to outpace earnings.
Highlighting the importance of a strong workforce, Obi said a nation’s development is closely tied to the well-being and productivity of its workers.

He warned that neglecting workers’ welfare ultimately affects national growth and stability.
Beyond economic concerns, he also encouraged citizens to take an active role in governance, urging them to support leaders who demonstrate competence, integrity, and compassion.
Obi concluded by calling for a more equitable society built on fairness, justice, and respect for labour, emphasising that meaningful national progress depends on improving the conditions of workers.
