EKO HOT BLOG reports that according to the party, the 2027 presidential ticket will be occupied by a southern candidate for a single four-year term, after which the ticket will rotate to the North in 2031.
The NDC explained that the decision was based on the principles of power rotation and inclusiveness between the Northern and Southern regions of Nigeria.
The party stated that the arrangement was adopted in the interest of national unity, political balance, and stability.
According to the NDC, the zoning formula is aimed at reducing sectional tension and ensuring that the party remains open and acceptable to Nigerians across all regions.
The development comes amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 election, especially following the entry of several high-profile politicians into the party.
Meanwhile, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has dismissed claims that the NDC is working in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 election.
Onanuga reacted to comments made by former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, over the defection of former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, from the African Democratic Congress to the NDC.

Melaye had criticised Obi, alleging that the former Labour Party presidential candidate was unwilling to contest a primary election and preferred to be handed the party’s ticket.
The former senator also claimed that the NDC was indirectly working for the APC.
However, Onanuga rejected the allegation in a statement shared via his 𝕏 account on Wednesday.
