EKO HOT BLOG reports that the development followed a tense build-up to the party’s national convention, which was initially scheduled to ratify Jonathan’s candidacy but was later disrupted by a venue crisis that forced a change of location.
In a statement issued on Saturday by PDP National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the party explained that the management of the original event centre cancelled the booking after what it described as pressure and threats allegedly linked to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
According to the party, the event centre operators claimed they received warnings that their certificate of occupancy could be revoked and the facility demolished if the PDP convention was allowed to hold at the venue.
The PDP said the situation created serious tension and prompted an emergency meeting of party leaders, where it was resolved that the initial plan to resist the security presence at the venue would be abandoned in order to avoid escalation.
The party subsequently moved the convention to another location, where Jonathan’s candidacy was eventually ratified and his certificate of return officially issued.
The PDP strongly condemned the alleged actions surrounding the disruption, describing them as an attempt to frustrate democratic processes within the party.
It called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and caution Wike, warning that actions capable of undermining political activities could pose a threat to Nigeria’s democratic stability.
With Jonathan now formally endorsed, the PDP stated that it is fully prepared for the 2027 general elections and will take necessary steps to ensure a strong and coordinated campaign ahead of the polls.
