The details were made public following the formal inauguration of the Democracy Day Inter-Ministerial Committee by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, at a state briefing on Tuesday.
According to the official program released by the SGF’s media office, the commemorative activities will commence on Thursday, June 4, with a World Press Conference. This will be closely followed by special Juma’at prayers on Friday, June 5, and an inter-denominational church service on Sunday, June 7.
The itinerary continues into the following week with a highly anticipated Democracy Day public lecture scheduled for June 9, followed by specialized youth and women-oriented empowerment programs on June 10.
The national celebration will peak on June 12 with a dual presidential broadcast and the joint National Assembly address, before concluding with an official Democracy Day Gala night.
During the committee’s inauguration, Senator George Akume paid deep tribute to the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola and various other heroes of the historic June 12, 1993, election struggle, noting that the democratic institutions being fortified across the federation today stand firmly on the sacrifices of those patriots.

The SGF emphasized that the anniversary offers a significant opportunity for the Tinubu administration to reflect on its progress, showcase tangible governance achievements, and reaffirm its core commitment to democratic ideals, national development, and institutional reforms despite ongoing socio-economic pressures.
With the anniversary exactly ten days away, Akume directed all technical sub-committees to finalize their operational budgets and commence immediate execution to ensure a seamless national event.
However, he explicitly cautioned that the 2026 celebrations must remain strictly modest but deeply purposeful, fully aligning with the administration’s overarching policy on fiscal discipline and responsible resource management.
The primary organizing committee, chaired by the SGF himself, draws participation from vital security and administrative organs, including the National Security Adviser, the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the DSS, and the Ministers of Information, Interior, Defence, Finance, and Foreign Affairs.
