- YABATECH Research Teams Win N80m TETFund Grants for Innovative Projects
- The project is being led by Tairu Toyin of the Department of Mechanical Engineering
- According to the researchers, the innovation has the potential to provide practical solutions to plastic pollution
The Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) has secured nearly N80 million in grants under the 2026 Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) National Research Fund intervention to support two multidisciplinary research projects focused on renewable energy, environmental sustainability, waste management and food preservation.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the institution’s Deputy Registrar, Adekunle Adams, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Lagos, describing the development as another milestone in YABATECH’s growing reputation for applied research, innovation and technological advancement.

According to Adams, one of the projects titled “Smart Waste Management and Cold Chain Logistics: Integrating IoT and Biogas for Efficient Perishable Food Storage” received approximately N41 million in funding.
The project is being led by Tairu Toyin of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and aims to deploy Internet of Things (IoT) technologies alongside biogas-powered systems to address waste management challenges and improve the storage of perishable agricultural products.
He noted that the initiative is expected to reduce post-harvest losses, enhance food security, improve energy efficiency and promote environmental sustainability.
Members of the research team include Ismail Badmus, Ojesipe Adeoye, Badmus Babatunde, Abdullahi Akinleye, Akinjaiyeju Olubunmi and other collaborators.
The second project, titled “Circular Economy: Converting Plastic Waste to Gas by Gasification,” attracted N38.78 million in funding and is being spearheaded by Ogunyemi Olumide of the Department of Chemical Engineering.
The study seeks to develop sustainable technologies capable of converting plastic waste into gaseous fuel through gasification processes.

Adams explained that the research team comprises experts drawn from the Departments of Biological Sciences, Urban and Regional Planning, Mechanical Engineering and the Central Research Laboratory, as well as three mentees from Vocational Education, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.
According to the researchers, the innovation has the potential to provide practical solutions to plastic pollution while creating alternative energy sources for households and industries.
The Deputy Registrar said the grants form part of the Federal Government’s N7.5 billion intervention approved by TETFund for 174 research projects in universities, polytechnics and colleges of education across the country.
Reacting to the development, the Rector of YABATECH, Ibraheem Abdul, described the grants as a reflection of the institution’s commitment to research excellence and innovation.
He stated that the institution remains focused on supporting research capable of producing transformative solutions in renewable energy, environmental management, food security and industrial development.
“These grants reaffirm YABATECH’s commitment to research excellence and innovation, strengthening our capacity to develop practical solutions that address national development challenges effectively.
“With nearly N80 million secured, these projects position YABATECH prominently within Nigeria’s knowledge economy while advancing sustainable development, environmental protection and industrial growth,” Abdul said.
The rector also commended TETFund for its sustained support for impactful research, expressing confidence that the outcomes of the projects would stimulate innovation, generate employment opportunities and contribute significantly to national economic growth.
Other beneficiaries of the intervention include Federal Polytechnic Ilaro, Federal Polytechnic Bida, Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Kaduna Polytechnic and several other tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
