EKO HOT BLOG reports that the former INEC chairman, who completed his tenure last year, was among the ambassadors appointed by President Bola Tinubu as part of a diplomatic reshuffle that attracted widespread public attention.
Upon his arrival in Doha on Wednesday, Yakubu was formally received at the airport by Ambassador Ibrahim Yousif Abdullah Fakhro, Director of the Protocol Department at Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The reception also drew a strong African diplomatic presence, with 13 African ambassadors in attendance. Also present were the Secretary-General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum, Dr. Philip Mshelbila, and President of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation in Qatar, Michael Ndukaihe Ihekwaba.
The turnout underscored the importance attached to Nigeria’s relationship with Qatar and the expectations surrounding Yakubu’s new assignment.
His posting comes at a time when Nigeria is seeking stronger economic partnerships, foreign investment, and deeper cooperation with strategic international partners.
Energy is expected to be one of the key areas of focus. Nigeria and Qatar are both major players in the global natural gas industry and share interests in expanding opportunities within the evolving energy market.
Yakubu is expected to promote Nigeria’s Decade of Gas initiative while attracting Qatari investment and expertise into the country’s energy infrastructure and liquefied natural gas sector.
Beyond energy, the ambassador will be tasked with strengthening economic ties and presenting Nigeria’s ongoing reforms as investment opportunities. Particular attention is expected to be placed on attracting capital from the Qatar Investment Authority, one of the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds.
Potential areas of collaboration include agriculture, aviation, real estate, and digital infrastructure.
Yakubu is also expected to engage the Nigerian community in Qatar, improve consular services, and promote diaspora contributions to national development.

Having spent years managing electoral processes, the former INEC chairman now faces the challenge of delivering diplomatic and economic outcomes that strengthen Nigeria’s presence in the Gulf region.
