The Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), under the Federal Ministry of Education, has announced an extension of the deadline for the submission of textbooks and other instructional resources for the 2026 Phase 1 assessment, reassessment, and ranking.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the extension, approved by the Honourable Ministers of Education, was granted in response to genuine requests from stakeholders in the book industry for additional time to comply with the new policy requirements.

In a public notice signed by NERDC Executive Secretary, Professor Salisu Shehu, on Friday, June 19, 2026, the Council noted that the new deadline for Phase 1 submissions is now July 3, 2026. The original deadline was June 19, 2026.
The notice emphasized that this extension is final and no further extensions will be granted. Textbooks and instructional materials submitted after the new deadline will not be considered for assessment in this phase.
Key details of the updated schedule include:

– Assessment and ranking for 2026 will be conducted in three phases:
Phase 1 (Primary 1, Primary 4, JSS 1 & SS1),
Phase 2 (Primary 2, Primary 5, JSS 2 & SS2), and
Phase 3 (Primary 3, Primary 6, JSS 3 & SS3).
-All textbooks, including those previously assessed for the specified class levels, must be re-submitted for fresh assessment and ranking under the new policy guidelines and improved benchmarks.
– Assessment of all submitted materials for Phase 1 is expected to be concluded by July 31, 2026.
Stakeholders are advised to strictly adhere to the Book Quality Guidelines and Submission Procedure, including payment processes, available on the NERDC website: www.nerdc.gov.ng.
The Council urged publishers, authors, printers, and other stakeholders to take full advantage of the extended window to complete their submissions.
All other guidelines, requirements, and conditions from the earlier notice remain valid.
