The group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup is drawing to a close, with the final round of matches in Groups G, H and I set to be played on Friday, June 26, as teams battle for the remaining places in the knockout stage.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that several major results from Thursday’s fixtures have already reshaped the Round of 32 bracket, with the United States, Ecuador, Australia and Paraguay all sealing qualification under dramatic circumstances.
The United States finished top of Group D despite suffering a dramatic 3-2 defeat to Türkiye. A stoppage time winner denied the Americans victory, but their earlier performances were enough to secure first place in the group.
As group winners, the USA will now face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32 as they continue their quest for a first-ever FIFA World Cup title.
One of the biggest surprises of the tournament came as Ecuador defeated Germany 2-1. Gonzalo Plata scored the decisive goal in the 77th minute to hand Ecuador a famous victory and secure qualification as one of the tournament’s best third placed teams.
Despite the defeat, Germany still progressed as Group D winners, while Ecuador’s victory ensured their place in the knockout phase.
Australia and Paraguay also booked their places in the Round of 32 after successfully navigating a highly competitive group, completing the list of teams advancing from Group D.
With the expanded 48 team tournament format, 32 nations will progress to the knockout stage. The top two teams from each of the 12 groups automatically qualify, alongside the eight best third placed teams.
Several countries have already confirmed their places in the next round, including Mexico, Brazil, France, Argentina, the Netherlands, Japan, Switzerland, Canada, Morocco, Ivory Coast, Norway and South Africa.
Attention now turns to Friday’s decisive fixtures, where qualification remains on the line in Groups G, H and I. Belgium and Egypt are among the teams seeking progress from Group G, while Spain and Uruguay headline Group H. Senegal and Iraq will also be aiming to secure their places from Group I.
The Round of 32 will begin on Sunday, June 28, with the race to lift football’s biggest prize continuing until the final on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
