- INEC has identified 385 flashpoints in Osun ahead of the governorship election
- It also listed 200 hard to reach areas across the state
- About 75 percent of election materials are ready
Ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election in Osun State, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed that it has mapped out 385 flashpoints and about 200 hard-to-reach areas across the state.
Eko Hot Blog gathered that the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Osun State, Oluwatoyin Babalola, made this known on Friday during a stakeholders’ meeting organised by the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the South-West, Adegoke Fayoade.

The meeting brought together heads of security agencies, religious leaders, electoral officials, and representatives of the media at the Osun State Police Command headquarters in Osogbo. The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, was also present.

Babalola said INEC had completed a comprehensive risk assessment across all 30 local government areas in the state and shared the findings with relevant security agencies to guide election planning and operations.
According to her, the commission has also carried out risk management training as part of preparations for what she described as an “amber zone” environment. She explained that field officers would be deployed for on-the-ground verification and assessment of sensitive locations across the state.
“We identified 385 flashpoints which have been shared with security agencies. We also identified about 200 difficult terrains that are not easily accessible and in some cases not motorable,” she said, noting that staff have been trained on safety and conflict management ahead of deployment.

The REC also revealed that she had visited 29 of the 30 local government areas in the state, including Ila and Ifedayo LGAs, where security concerns such as kidnapping had previously been reported. She added that security agencies had assured the commission of adequate safety before, during, and after the election.
On logistics, Babalola said INEC had already received about 75 per cent of the materials needed for the poll, adding that non-sensitive materials had been distributed to designated locations.
She stressed that collaboration with security agencies remained crucial, warning that even the best electoral preparations would be meaningless without peace on election day.
INEC, she said, remains committed to delivering a “free, fair, credible, inclusive and transparent” governorship election.
Osun State residents are expected to head to the polls on August 15, 2026, to elect a governor, with the incumbent, Ademola Adeleke, seeking re-election under the Accord Party.
