Ex-Speaker Obasa Defends Governorship Ambition Amid Controversy

Mudashiru Obasa, the recently ousted Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has asserted that aspiring to become governor is not a crime, reiterating his qualifications and experience to lead the state.
Obasa’s removal on January 13, endorsed by 35 out of the 40 Assembly members, was based on allegations of misconduct and financial mismanagement.

He was replaced by his former deputy, Mojisola Lasbat-Meranda. Despite his removal, Obasa maintains that the process was flawed, and he continues to regard himself as Speaker until proper procedures are followed.
Speaking on Saturday at his official residence in GRA, Ikeja, before supporters from the Mandate Movement and local politicians, Obasa dismissed the allegations against him as unsubstantiated.
Highlighting his legislative experience spanning over two decades, including six successful elections since 2003, Obasa declared his capability to govern Lagos State.
“Having ambition to become a governor is not a sin,” Obasa said to a cheering crowd.
“When the budget was presented, I clarified that I had no current thoughts of governorship. However, this does not negate my qualifications or experience for such a position. I remain the Speaker until due process is followed.”
Meanwhile, members of the Assembly reaffirmed their support for Speaker Mojisola Lasbat-Meranda, emphasizing their commitment to their decision.
In a statement, the Assembly clarified: “The majority of members elected Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker for the 10th Assembly. However, a majority decision was taken to remove him, and we fully support the leadership of Speaker Meranda. Nothing has changed.”
The lawmakers underscored the constitutional validity of their decision and warned against attempts to destabilize the Assembly.
This development has sparked political debate within Lagos, with Obasa’s supporters calling for peace and dialogue while urging the Assembly to reconsider their stance.
