Colombia secured the final spot in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after edging Ghana 1-0 on Friday in a dominant display at Arrowhead Stadium.
Jhon Arias scored the only goal of the match as the South Americans controlled proceedings but failed to convert several other chances against a Ghana side that struggled to create meaningful opportunities.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the victory sets up a Round of 16 clash against Switzerland in Vancouver on Tuesday, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.
Ghana threatened in the opening minute when Thomas Partey fired narrowly wide, but the Black Stars failed to build on that early opportunity as Colombia quickly took control of the contest.
Colombia suffered an early setback when Jhon Cordoba was forced off with an apparent groin injury and was replaced by Luis Suarez. Ghana also made an early change after Marvin Senaya picked up an injury, with Alidu Seidu coming on as his replacement.
The breakthrough came in the 14th minute after Suarez showed determination on the right wing before delivering a cross that found an unmarked Arias, who calmly guided the ball into the net.
The goal piled pressure on Ghana, who had scored only twice during the group stage and struggled to break down Colombia’s organised defence.
Colombia continued to dominate possession and created several chances to extend their lead. Luis Diaz came close in the 39th minute but dragged his effort wide, while Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi produced an outstanding save to deny Johan Mojica’s powerful header in first-half stoppage time.
Ghana failed to register a single shot on target in the opening half and completed fewer than half the number of passes managed by Colombia.
The South Americans continued to waste opportunities after the break. Diaz had a goal ruled out for offside before another effort was comfortably saved by Zigi, while Juan Quintero also missed the target late in the game.
Despite their missed chances, Colombia comfortably held on for victory as Ghana ended the match without a single shot on target.
Diaz, who was named Player of the Match, admitted Colombia needed to improve their finishing despite the convincing performance.
“We’re just missing that little detail of finishing a bit better and staying composed,” Diaz said. “I think we played a very solid game.”

Reflecting on his own display, the Bayern Munich winger added: “I had chances to convert. That confidence I want to have isn’t quite at 100 per cent yet.
“I’m trying to improve game by game. I felt much better in today’s match than in the previous one, without a doubt.”
