The Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has honored the memory of the 22 athletes who lost their lives in a tragic accident while returning from the National Sports Festival held in May 2025.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf described the athletes as heroes who made the people of Kano proud and deserve to be remembered forever.

In a statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, it was announced that the Kano State Sports Institute has been renamed “Kano State 22 Athletes Sports Institute” in their honor.
Additionally, the Kano State Sports Commission will now be known as the “Kano State 22 Athletes Sports Commission.”
The governor made the announcement during a courtesy visit by representatives of the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mrs Remi Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who donated 110 million naira to the families of the deceased athletes.
The athletes tragically passed away just five kilometers from reaching Kano.

Governor Yusuf reaffirmed that the government would take responsibility for the education of the athletes’ children, while their widows would be included in empowerment programs.
He stated that for the athletes who were unmarried, their parents would be considered for support through similar initiatives.
