Sani described the National Assembly Open Week as a novel democratic platform.
The annual program is designed to bridge the gap between elected representatives and the public by providing citizens direct access to lawmakers, committee rooms, and structural oversight processes.
He noted that the event exemplifies democracy at work by giving Nigerians first-hand experience regarding how laws are made and how the legislature keeps the executive arm of government accountable.
Beyond legislative ethics, Sani urged Nigerians to defend the country’s global image against systematic negative profiling.

He expressed dissatisfaction with how international observers often criminalize Nigerians, pointing out that Nigeria has historically sacrificed its resources and personnel for global stability without demanding compensation.
He listed Nigeria’s historical military contributions during the Second World War against Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy, alongside its post-independence leadership in peacekeeping missions across the Congo, Tanzania, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Somalia, and Darfur.
He also highlighted the country’s pivotal role in funding and supporting anti-colonial and anti-apartheid liberation movements in Southern Africa.
Sani reminded the audience that Nigeria’s current democratic landscape was earned through immense sacrifices, jail terms, and lost lives during the prolonged struggle against military dictatorships.
Acknowledging the heavy socio-economic pressures faced by lawmakers from constituents, relatives, and political associates, Sani noted that the public often holds unrealistic financial expectations that go beyond a legislator’s constitutional powers.
He remarked that many individuals entered parliament wealthy and left poorer due to these demands, but urged current lawmakers to withstand the turbulent political state and make a meaningful impact.
