The initiative also aligns with the Federal Government’s directive for all states to adopt the National Education Management Information System for education data collection.
Speaking at the launch, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, described the transition as a significant milestone in building a more efficient and reliable education system.
He said the Annual School Census remains critical to government planning, providing data used for policy formulation, budgeting and the equitable distribution of resources across schools.
According to the commissioner, the digital platform will improve the accuracy, credibility and speed of data collection while providing education authorities with reliable information for effective planning and decision-making.
Alli-Balogun reaffirmed the state’s commitment to supporting the Federal Government’s digitalisation agenda for education administration, assuring schools of the necessary technical support to ensure a seamless transition.

He urged proprietors of private schools, principals, head teachers and education officers to submit accurate and complete information through the new digital platform.
Also speaking, Chairman of the Lagos State Coordinating Unit and Acting Statistician-General, Bashir Temitayo Oseni-Ope, said the introduction of the Digital NEMIS would strengthen the quality and integrity of education data, enabling evidence-based planning and evaluation.
He noted that reliable education statistics are essential for monitoring school performance, planning infrastructure, allocating resources and improving learning outcomes across the state.
The Annual School Census is Nigeria’s official source of education statistics, capturing information on student enrolment, teaching and non-teaching staff, school facilities, infrastructure and other key indicators used for state and national education planning.
The Lagos State Government said the digital platform is expected to reduce errors associated with manual data collection, eliminate duplicate records, improve transparency, strengthen data validation and provide real-time information for faster decision-making.
It called on all public and private primary and secondary schools in the state to participate fully in the 2026 Annual School Census and comply with the new digital reporting process.
