The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has issued a firm assurance to the Nigerian public that the commission will uphold absolute integrity, transparency, and accountability during the upcoming 2027 general elections.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Prof. Amupitan gave the solemn commitment during an official courtesy visit on Friday to former Head of State and Chairman of the National Peace Committee, General Abdulsalam Abubakar (retd.), at his private residence in Minna, the Niger State capital.

The electoral chief led an influential delegation comprising INEC National Commissioners, the Secretary to the Commission, key department directors, and senior technical aides.
Describing the visit as a “pilgrimage of appreciation,” the INEC boss paid tribute to General Abubakar’s historical legacy, celebrating him as a foundational architect of modern Nigerian democracy following his pivotal leadership in transitioning the nation from military rule to democratic governance in 1999.
He noted that the commission continues to view the elder statesman not only as a distinguished national icon but as a vital pillar of institutional moral support for the electoral umpire.
Addressing his host, Prof. Amupitan commended the National Peace Committee for its proactive mediation and the institutionalization of the Peace Accord framework ahead of national elections.
He noted that the accord has exerted a powerful moralizing influence over Nigeria’s political climate, constraining political actors against electoral violence while reinforcing the sovereign authority of the electorate.
Reassuring citizens across the country, Prof. Amupitan stated that despite the complex operational challenges and political pressures facing the electoral commission, his administration remains resolutely committed to protecting the democratic process.
He emphasized that the primary mandate of INEC is to safeguard the sacred trust of voters by ensuring that election results accurately represent the genuine choice of the populace expressed at polling units nationwide.
During the engagement, the INEC chief formally confirmed the official calendar for the 2027 general elections.
According to the approved timetable, the Presidential and National Assembly elections will hold on January 16, 2027, while the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly polls are scheduled to take place on February 6, 2027.
In his response, General Abdulsalam Abubakar expressed gratitude for the visit and commended Prof. Amupitan’s vision for electoral reform.
The former Head of State called on all political parties, civil society organizations, security agencies, and ordinary citizens to rally behind INEC to ensure peaceful, orderly, and credible polls across all thirty-six states and the Federal Capital Territory.
