Lagos State Deputy Governor and the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, has unveiled an ambitious development agenda centred on tackling flooding, building collapse, waste management and other critical challenges confronting Nigeria’s commercial capital ahead of the 2027 governorship election, Eko Hot Blog reports.
Speaking during an interview with journalists, Hamzat said his administration, if elected, would prioritise projects that directly improve the quality of life of Lagos residents, with security, infrastructure, housing, healthcare and environmental sustainability topping his agenda.

On flooding, Hamzat described Lagos as naturally vulnerable because large parts of the state lie below sea level. He said his government would enforce physical planning regulations, remove structures obstructing drainage channels and ensure continuous clearing of canals to reduce flooding across the state.
Addressing waste management, the APC candidate said Lagos must move away from relying on landfills by embracing recycling and waste to energy initiatives, noting that existing dump sites are gradually reaching capacity.
He also pledged to tackle the persistent challenge of building collapse by strengthening enforcement of construction standards through the Certified Accreditors Programme, which assigns registered professionals to monitor building projects and ensure compliance with approved regulations.
Hamzat further promised to improve access to potable water, saying his administration aims to provide running water to 60 per cent of Lagos households within its first two years by rehabilitating and expanding key water infrastructure.
On security, he advocated greater investment in technology and expressed support for state policing to strengthen community based security across Lagos.
The APC governorship candidate also outlined plans to establish a University of Medicine and Allied Sciences to increase the production of doctors and other healthcare professionals, while advocating a sustainable mortgage financing system to make housing more affordable for low income earners.
Hamzat said ongoing infrastructure projects, including the extension of the Blue Rail Line to Okokomaiko and stronger integration with the Red Rail Line, would remain top priorities under his administration.
He dismissed reports of any agreement restricting him to a single term if elected governor and expressed confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would secure a second term, saying the President had demonstrated courage by implementing difficult but necessary economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidy.
