Lagos Govt Records Three Overnight Road Accidents
Says No Deaths Recorded in Three Overnight Road Incidents
Reaffirms Road Safety Commitments

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has confirmed that three separate road traffic incidents occurred across different parts of Lagos in the early hours of Saturday, with no fatalities recorded.

Eko Hot Blog reports that the agency said the incidents, which occurred at Olupese Bus Stop, Aswani Bus Stop and Oba Ogunji Road, were promptly handled by LASEMA in collaboration with the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Nigeria Police and other emergency responders.

According to the agency, the coordinated response ensured the safety of residents, the treatment of injured victims and the speedy restoration of traffic along the affected routes.

The first incident occurred at about 12:07 a.m. at Olupese Bus Stop inward Oshodi, where a truck transporting granite became stranded after one of its rear tyres got trapped in a pothole, obstructing traffic.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the poor condition of the road contributed to the incident.

LASEMA said no casualty or injury was recorded.

The agency immediately deployed its Eagle Response Team to divert traffic while its heavy-duty recovery equipment, Super Metro, was mobilised to remove the stranded truck. Recovery operations were ongoing as of the time the statement was issued.

Barely an hour later, at about 12:59 a.m., another crash occurred at Aswani Bus Stop inward Iyana Isolo involving a Toyota Sienna with registration number ABJ-515DQ and an oncoming truck with no visible registration number.

The impact forced the truck onto a culvert, causing a traffic obstruction.

Although no life was lost, three occupants of the Sienna, comprising two adult women and one adult man, sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Emergency responders from LASEMA’s Lagos Response Team, LRU Medics, LASAMBUS, LASTMA and the Nigeria Police administered first aid before the injured victims were taken to hospital for further medical treatment.

Traffic was diverted while damaged vehicles were evacuated from the scene. By 2:45 a.m., recovery operations had been completed, with the truck handed over to LASTMA and the Sienna released to officers of the Aswani Police Station.

A third accident occurred at about 1:19 a.m. on Oba Ogunji Road involving a concrete mixer truck belonging to the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and a Volkswagen bus with registration number FKJ 424KA.

Preliminary findings attributed the crash to excessive speed by the Volkswagen bus.

LASEMA said no injuries or fatalities were recorded.

The agency’s response team carried out on-site mechanical repairs on the concrete mixer truck before evacuating both vehicles from the road. The Volkswagen bus was subsequently released to its owner after the road was cleared for normal traffic.

Commenting on the incidents, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, commended emergency responders for their swift and professional intervention.

He urged motorists to obey traffic regulations, avoid speeding and promptly report damaged roads to the appropriate authorities.

“The Sanwo-Olu administration remains committed to zero tolerance for loss of life on Lagos roads. The synergy between LASEMA, LASAMBUS, LASTMA, the Police and other stakeholders ensured that these incidents were managed with minimal impact. We will continue to invest in equipment, training and rapid response to safeguard Lagosians,” he said.

The Lagos State Government also advised motorists against driving against traffic, overloading vehicles and engaging in reckless driving, particularly during late-night hours, while urging residents to report emergencies through LASEMA’s toll-free emergency lines for prompt response.
