Heavy Security Deployed as 2026 Osun Osogbo Festival Begins

Heavy security was deployed around the ancient Osun Osogbo Sacred Grove on Friday as activities for the annual Osun Osogbo Festival commenced in Osogbo, Osun State.

A strong presence of armed police officers was observed from the Olaiya Ita Olokan Road leading to the sacred grove, with security personnel stationed at regular intervals to monitor movement into and out of the venue.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that at the final entrance to the grove, heavily armed military personnel were also on duty as worshippers, devotees and other participants entered the site for the cultural celebration.

Inside the grove, members of the Vigilante Corps restricted journalists from accessing the podium reserved for invited dignitaries.

At the time journalists were denied access, none of the invited guests had arrived at the venue.

When approached for an explanation, the leader of the security team simply said, “CSO said we should not allow you on the podium.”

A security source, who spoke anonymously, said the heightened security was necessary due to recent security concerns in Osun State.

“Security must be top notch because of the killings in recent months in Osun. The development has been linked to rivalry among cult groups,” the source said.

Speaking on the significance of the festival, an Osun devotee from Ikorodu, Lagos State, Omisewa Omolade, described the event as one of the most important celebrations in Yoruba traditional religion.

“I come to Osogbo every year to participate in this festival. Just as other symbolic spiritual sites globally are important to adherents of other religions, this site is important to us, traditionalists,” she said.

As of the time of filing this report, the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji, and the Arugba, the votary maid, were expected at the sacred grove for the commencement of the festival’s final rites.

Ahead of the celebration, the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, had assured residents, tourists, worshippers and other visitors of adequate security throughout the festival.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, the command said extensive security preparations had been completed to ensure a peaceful and successful celebration of the internationally recognised cultural festival.

According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police directed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, Tactical Commanders and other operational units to implement comprehensive security measures across Osogbo and other strategic locations.

The police also disclosed that security personnel had been strategically deployed to major event venues, access roads, worship centres, tourist attractions, markets, motor parks and other identified flashpoints to protect lives and property.

The command added that it was collaborating with government agencies, traditional institutions, festival organisers, community leaders and other security stakeholders to ensure effective coordination and a swift response to any security challenge.

The police further assured the public that adequate arrangements had been made to manage traffic, regulate crowds, prevent criminal activities and respond promptly to emergencies, while urging residents and visitors to remain vigilant and law abiding throughout the festival.
