The NiDCOM boss spoke during the recent COMPASS@5 anniversary celebration in Abuja, where stakeholders reviewed the achievements of the COMPASS Programme over the past five years and discussed priorities for strengthening migration governance in Nigeria.
She maintained that the reputation and respect accorded Nigerians in the diaspora are closely linked to regular migration and urged citizens seeking opportunities abroad to use lawful migration channels.
Dabiri-Erewa has consistently condemned irregular migration, particularly dangerous journeys through the Sahara Desert and Mediterranean Sea, which she previously described as “voluntary suicide.”
She has also partnered with international organisations to promote safe, orderly and regular migration while raising awareness about the dangers associated with irregular routes.

According to her, Nigerians who embark on irregular migration journeys risk becoming victims of human trafficking, forced labour, prostitution and other forms of exploitation.
Many also face robbery, displacement, detention and death while attempting to reach their destinations through dangerous routes.
The NiDCOM chairman stressed the need for Nigerians to take advantage of legal migration opportunities while ensuring that the country benefits from the knowledge, skills, networks and investments of its diaspora community.
