His decision comes amid growing criticism of football administration in Nigeria following recent setbacks involving the country’s national teams.

The Super Eagles and Super Falcons have both suffered major setbacks in their World Cup qualification campaigns.

The NFF board has also come under scrutiny from security agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Department of State Services, over the management of funds released by the Federal Government for the national teams.

The agencies are investigating the utilisation of the N17 billion Federal Government intervention fund released to the federation for players’ wages and bonuses.

President Bola Tinubu approved the fund in 2024 to clear outstanding payments owed to members of Nigeria’s national teams.

The development follows Nigeria’s failure to qualify for consecutive FIFA World Cups by the Super Eagles and the historic failure of the Super Falcons to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

The Super Falcons lost 1-0 to Cameroon in the quarter finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The defeat ended their title defence and denied Nigeria automatic qualification for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
