Preliminary findings suggest that the officers claimed they were escorting the two men as “suspects” in connection with an undisclosed police operation. However, anti-graft officials have expressed doubts over the legitimacy of that claim and the origin of the massive cash haul.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has since detained the officers as part of ongoing investigations aimed at uncovering who authorised the escort and who actually owns the money.

Sources said a senior female police officer who reportedly received the two men on arrival aboard an Ethiopian Airlines flight is also being investigated.
The alert was reportedly raised at 7:52 a.m. at the Domestic Terminal Two (DT2) of the airport, moments before the suspects were scheduled to board Aero Flight N2121 to Abuja.
Security officials have described the case as “sensitive and complex,” adding that further details would be released after the EFCC completes its preliminary investigation.
