- Women in Anambra protested the burning death of Mrs. Blessing Nwaka.
- They demanded justice and warned men against domestic violence.
- The government promised strict action to ensure accountability.
Hundreds of women from the 179 communities in Anambra State gathered on Thursday for a peaceful protest to mourn the late Mrs. Blessing Nwaka, who was tragically set ablaze by her husband in Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area.
The women, drawn from various associations including the Anambra State Association of Town Unions (ASATU), marched to the office of the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Dora Akunyili, at the Women Development Centre in Awka. Chanting songs of protest, they expressed their anger and grief over the gruesome act.
Mrs. Nwaka had succumbed to severe burns on Wednesday at a nearby hospital, following the attack allegedly carried out by her husband, identified as Obiozor, over accusations of infidelity.
Leading the protest, the National President of ASATU Women Wing, Mrs. Ify Okaro, condemned domestic violence and urged men to treat their spouses with love and care, warning against actions that could lead to such fatal incidents.
Mrs. Josine Unachukwu, representing the Women Leaders of the communities, issued a stern warning, stating that the women would burn down the homes of any man who commits such heinous acts in the future.

Addressing the protesters, Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs. Ify Obinabo, reassured them of the state government’s commitment to seeking justice. She noted that the governor’s wife, Mrs. Nonye Soludo, was actively involved in ensuring that the perpetrator would face the full weight of the law. She also urged men to seek help from the ministry rather than resorting to violence.
The women, visibly enraged, carried placards and chanted slogans such as “Marriage is not a do-or-die affair,” “Anujuo must go,” and “Stop killing women” as they vowed to fight against domestic violence in the state.
