ASUU Declares Indefinite Strike at Plateau State University
ASUU PLASU declared an indefinite strike over unresolved demands from management.
Lecturers are demanding pension implementation, wage arrears and improved staff accommodation.

Academic activities have been suspended at Plateau State University, Bokkos, after the university chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities declared an indefinite strike.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the decision followed a Congress meeting held by the union on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, after the university management failed to satisfactorily resolve issues raised by the lecturers.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the ASUU PLASU Chairperson, Vincent Choji, and Secretary, Lomka Iliya, said the union had earlier given the university management a 14 day ultimatum to address its concerns.

The ultimatum, issued on August 11, expired without a satisfactory resolution of the issues, according to the union.

ASUU said the university administration responded to the demands in a letter dated August 18. However, the union said the response failed to adequately address the concerns contained in its demands.

The lecturers said they were left with no option but to commence industrial action after efforts to resolve the issues through dialogue failed.

The union also said the strike had received the approval of the National Executive Council of ASUU.

Among the major demands is the implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme for members of staff.

The lecturers are also demanding the full implementation of the 2025 agreement reached between the Federal Government and ASUU, as well as the payment of outstanding arrears dating back to January 2026.

Another concern raised by the union is the condition of staff accommodation at the university.

ASUU is demanding safe and secure staff quarters for its members. It also called for the construction of trenches around the university’s perimeter fence to strengthen security within the institution.

The lecturers further accused the university management of intimidating union leaders and demanded an end to what they described as acts of intimidation.

The union is also demanding the payment of 22 months’ outstanding arrears of the 25 per cent and 35 per cent wage award.

Following the Congress decision, ASUU PLASU directed all members to immediately withdraw from academic activities.

The union said the directive would remain in force until further notice.

The lecturers appealed to members of the university community, students and other stakeholders to understand the reasons for the industrial action.

ASUU said the strike became necessary because the issues raised by its members remained unresolved despite previous efforts to reach an agreement with the university management.
