Italian football icon Gianluigi Buffon has suggested that Michael Kayode has done enough to deserve a call-up to the senior national team of Italy.

Since joining Brentford from ACF Fiorentina, the defender has grown into a key member of the squad. He has featured in 28 league matches this campaign, helping Brentford climb to seventh place in the standings as the club pushes for a spot in European competitions.

Kayode’s impressive form has also sparked interest internationally. Born in Italy to Nigerian parents, the young defender is eligible to represent either Italy or Nigeria at senior level.
At the moment, Italy appear to have the upper hand because Kayode has previously represented the country in youth competitions.
He even etched his name in Italian football history by scoring the decisive goal that secured the UEFA European Under‑19 Championship title for Italy in 2023.
With Italy preparing for a crucial 2026 World Cup qualifying playoff against Northern Ireland, Buffon believes the Brentford defender could be among the new faces considered for the squad.
