The former governor, who is also a pioneer national chairman of the APC, revealed that efforts were made to avoid bitterness among Yoruba contenders.
However, Osinbajo did not step down for Tinubu, leading to a contested primary.
When questioned about whether Buhari opposed Tinubu’s candidacy, Akande denied the speculation.
He explained that Buhari had not shared such sentiments with him, and when queried about whether he had encouraged Osinbajo to run against Tinubu, the former President stated that in his culture, one does not challenge their mentor for a position of interest.
Ultimately, Tinubu emerged as the APC flag-bearer at the Special National Convention, defeating 13 other aspirants, including Osinbajo.
“He didn’t tell me so,” he said. “I asked him many questions, including whether he instigated Osinbajo to contest against Tinubu.
He said no and explained that, in his culture, when your mentor is interested in a position, you don’t contest with him.”
The build-up to the 2023 general elections saw a fiercely contested race for the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential ticket at the party’s Special National Convention in Abuja.
With 13 other aspirants vying for the position, Bola Tinubu emerged victorious, securing 1,271 votes to become the APC flag-bearer.
