CAN Mourns Lives Lost in Abuja Stampede, Calls for Unity and Safety
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic stampede at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, on Saturday morning. The incident occurred during a food distribution event, leaving at least ten people dead, including children, and many others injured.
In a statement, CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh extended condolences to the Catholic Church and the affected families, describing the tragedy as a painful reminder of life’s fragility. He urged Nigerians to work towards building a nation where everyone feels safe and valued.
Archbishop Okoh said the stampede was a heartbreaking outcome of what was meant to be a day of support for those in need. He encouraged the nation to honor the victims by striving for a future of hope, safety, and compassion.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic events at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. This is not just a statistic; it represents real families mourning their loved ones. We offer our heartfelt condolences to the church and all affected families,” Okoh said.
The CAN leader highlighted similar tragic incidents that occurred recently, emphasizing the need for better crowd control at public events.
- Ibadan Tragedy: On December 18, a stampede at a Christmas event in Ibadan claimed 35 lives, mostly children, and left six critically injured. The event, aimed at providing food and cash to over 5,000 children, ended in disaster.
- Anambra Incident: Days later, another stampede during a rice distribution event in Anambra State led to 22 deaths and injuries to 32 others.
Archbishop Okoh called for a collective response to these tragedies, urging Nigerians to support grieving families and promote better safety measures at public gatherings.
“This is a time for compassion and understanding,” he said. “Let us work together to ensure that such incidents never happen again. By caring for one another, we can heal and build a kinder, safer nation.”
