CNN to Cut 6% of Workforce Over Trump’s Return as US President

- CNN to cut 6% of its workforce amid a major restructuring, impacting around 200 employees.
- $70 million investment planned for digital expansion, with new roles to offset job losses.
- New paid streaming service announced as CNN adapts to evolving media landscape.
Our heritage reporter has learned that CNN, the US news network, is set to cut 6% of its workforce, around 200 employees, as part of a significant shakeup in staffing and programming.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that the move comes amid a surge in political news following Donald Trump’s return to the White House on Monday.
Despite the layoffs, CNN’s overall employee count may remain stable as new roles are created, according to the network. “Some of today’s announcements mean significant new job opportunities at CNN, but others will lead to the loss of some valued colleagues,” said CEO Mark Thompson in a memo to staff.

“Yes, there are job losses—around 6% of the current CNN workforce will be impacted—but we don’t expect total headcount to fall much this year, if at all,” Thompson added, highlighting a $70 million investment in digital initiatives expected to generate numerous new positions.
The restructuring raises questions about whether CNN will follow the trend of some legacy media outlets, which have replaced higher-salaried veteran staff with younger, lower-cost hires for digital projects.
This announcement mirrors challenges faced across the media landscape. In November, the Associated Press revealed plans to cut nearly 8% of its workforce amid economic pressures and client cancellations. Last July, CNN cut 100 positions while introducing a paid digital offering to complement its existing content.

Thompson also hinted at the upcoming launch of a new paid streaming product, though details remain under wraps. This follows the ill-fated launch of CNN+ in 2022, which was shuttered after just one month during the WarnerMedia and Discovery merger.
The broadcaster, emblematic of declining cable TV viewership, faces stiff competition. Fox News, long a conservative favourite, continues to dominate the ratings, while MSNBC has surpassed CNN, carving out a niche as a leading voice of opposition to Trump and his Republican allies.
