“To keep you hydrated and less hungry, you must focus on your hydration status to avoid severe dehydration which may lead to fainting,” Dr. Suleiman explained.
The doctor also cautioned about potential health risks associated with dehydration, such as “acute kidney injury, excessive production of gastric juice/enzymes which may trigger PUD/gastric ulcer, and severe dehydration affecting the brain, leading to fainting attacks, confusion, blurry vision, headaches, and so on.”
Dr. Suleiman recommended consuming foods with healthy sugars like dates, tea, or sweet fruits to maintain normal energy requirements for bodily functions. She also highlighted the importance of moderate salt intake to balance electrolytes in the body.
When it comes to breaking the fast, the doctor offered specific advice: “When you break your fast, avoid the ‘Don’ts’: Don’t start with solid foods, drink warm fluids or semi-liquid and something friendly. Avoid fruits that are acidic or sour in nature. Avoid eating large portions of food at a go. Eat gradually.”
By following these essential tips, Muslims can ensure they stay hydrated, maintain their energy levels, and avoid potential health complications during the Ramadan fasting period.
