To achieve this, the government has installed additional Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) on four major roads in Lagos. These systems will help manage traffic better, reduce accidents, and make commuting easier.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, explained that the ITS includes checkpoint sites to catch speeding drivers and e-police sites to monitor traffic violations. These high-tech cameras and real-time monitoring tools will enforce traffic rules even when officers are not present.
The government has set specific speed limits for certain roads: 80 km/h on Alapere-Ogudu Road and 60 km/h on Nitel, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Allen Avenue Junction, and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road. Any driver who runs a red light will be fined ₦20,000, while those caught speeding will pay ₦50,000.
Violators will receive a text message from the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) with details of their offence and instructions on how to pay the fine.
Commissioner Osiyemi stated that this initiative is not meant to punish people but to encourage safe driving and reduce accidents.
The government aims to improve road safety, reduce traffic congestion, and use real-time data to plan better roads.
By minimizing human interference, the system will also ensure fairer law enforcement. He urged all motorists, including private car owners and commercial drivers, to obey traffic laws, follow speed limits, and avoid reckless driving.
Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology Tunbosun Alake added that the project is a partnership between the government and private companies, aimed at making Lagos a more organized and technologically advanced city.
