- A stray elephant trampled a farmer to death in Imobi, Ogun State
- Incident follows deadly hippo attack in Adamawa that claimed one life
- Authorities confirm both animals were displaced from their habitats
Tension is rising across parts of Nigeria after a farmer was reportedly trampled to death by a wandering elephant in Imobi, Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun State.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the tragic incident was confirmed on Tuesday, July 29, by the Ogun State Commissioner for Forestry, Taiwo Oludotun, who stated that government officials were already heading to the affected community.

“Yes, we are aware and we are already on our way to the community,” Oludotun said.
This marks the second wildlife-related fatality in two days. On Monday, a hippopotamus displaced by flooding from Kiri Dam killed a resident of Banjiram, a community in Guyuk Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

Confirming the earlier attack, Chairman of Guyuk LGA, Shalom Kassa, explained that the hippo has been roaming farmlands and neighbourhoods, destroying crops and endangering lives.
“This is a serious threat to human lives and means of livelihoods; the animals are destroying farmlands, invading flooded homes, and endangering residents and livestock,” he said.
Kassa also expressed frustration over legal restrictions preventing locals from defending themselves.
“We are appealing to the state Ministry of Environment, wildlife officials, and relevant agencies to urgently intervene before more lives are lost,” he added.
Communities in both Ogun and Adamawa now face growing concerns over increased wildlife-human conflict, triggered by climate displacement and habitat disruption.
