The command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the development in a post shared via his X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday. He clarified that the arrest followed a routine but respectful inspection by police personnel, aimed at addressing any misconceptions about the conduct of law enforcement officers.
“‘See these police officers harassing two ladies, insisting on searching their bags…’ That would have been the narrative,” Hundeyin wrote, suggesting how the situation could have been misrepresented online.

“Following a brief and respectful inspection of their bags, a semi automatic pistol was discovered by officers attached to the Ipaja Division. One of the women subsequently led the police to the weapon’s owner—her husband,” he stated.
The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for deeper investigation.
Although the names of the suspects had not been released at the time of reporting, the police noted that efforts are ongoing to trace the origin of the weapon and determine the motive behind its possession.
“One less illegal firearm in circulation. Lagos Police is your friend!” Hundeyin added.
