The Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, has underscored the critical role of engineering in national development as he graced the public lecture and induction ceremony of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) as a Special Guest.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the event, which formally inducted new members into the prestigious professional body, brought together seasoned engineers, industry leaders, and emerging professionals committed to advancing the engineering profession in Nigeria.
Delivering his keynote remarks, Hon. Olowa emphasized the strategic importance of engineering in driving infrastructure development, innovation, and sustainable growth, particularly in rapidly developing regions like Ibeju-Lekki.
“Engineering remains the backbone of infrastructure development and a key driver of innovation and economic growth. As professionals, you must uphold the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and service to society,” he said.
He further encouraged the newly inducted members to remain committed to excellence and contribute meaningfully to nation-building through their expertise.
In his address, the Chief Host, Engr. Olufemi Dare, charged the inductees to see engineering beyond financial gains and embrace its transformative potential.
“Engineering is not just about making money; it is about solving problems and transforming society. You must be ready to take responsibility and contribute to national development,” he stated.
Delivering the lecture of the day, Engr. Dr. Olufunmilade Akingbagbohun, former National Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers, spoke on the theme, “The Role of Engineers in Driving Nigeria’s Socio-Economic Growth Through Entrepreneurship.”
She highlighted the importance of innovation and entrepreneurship in engineering practice.
“Engineers must go beyond technical skills and embrace entrepreneurship to create solutions that address the developmental challenges of our nation,” she said.
The event also had in attendance key government officials, including the Vice Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Hon. Isiaka Yusuf Olatunji; the Secretary to the Local Government, Hon. Adewale Adebanjo; council supervisors; former Lagos State House of Assembly member, Hon. Adewale Raheem Kazeem; the Council Manager, Dr. Adekoya Augustine; and members of the management team.
The ceremony concluded with a dinner reception, providing an opportunity for networking and celebration, as the newly inducted members were formally welcomed into the engineering community.
