A mining expert, Sylvester Kadiri, has praised the Federal Government’s decision to lift the five-year ban on mining in Zamfara State, asserting that it holds significant implications for Nigeria’s economy.

The resumption in Zamfara State is expected to substantially contribute to national revenue, with the mining sector poised to play a more prominent role in Nigeria’s economy.
Kadiri noted that this move would also create employment opportunities for local communities and help diversify Nigeria’s revenue sources.
According to Kadiri, the lifting of the mining ban is set to stimulate economic growth, particularly in Zamfara State, positively impacting Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
As a result, it is anticipated that foreign and local investors will be drawn to the region, leading to further economic development.
The government’s decision to lift the ban was reportedly influenced by significant security improvements in Zamfara State.
Kadiri expressed optimism that the safer environment would facilitate secure and efficient operations.
Moreover, he emphasized that the resumption of legal mining activities aimed to combat illegal mining and associated criminal activities, thereby promoting a more transparent and regulated sector.
Kadiri said: “The lifting of the ban on mining in Zamfara State presents opportunities for Nigeria’s economic growth, security improvement, and social development.
However, addressing environmental concerns, security risks, and ensuring local community engagement are crucial.”
Recall that the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, recently announced that FG has lifted the ban on mining exploration in Zamfara State after more than five years of security restrictions.

He explained that the decision was informed by the significant improvement in the security situation across the state.
The Federal Government under former President Muhammadu Buhari had in 2019, announced a complete ban on mining activities in Zamfara due to the escalating security concerns, particularly the links between banditry and illegal mining, as well as a measure to restore peace to the state.
