Former Lagos State Governor and Chairman of the NIMR Foundation Board of Trustees, Babatunde Raji Fashola, has raised concerns over the inadequate acknowledgement of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research’s contribution to the country’s health advancement.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Fashola made the remark during the November edition of the NIMR Monthly Media Chat, where he stressed the importance of stronger engagement between researchers and journalists.

He explained that effective communication plays a vital role in helping the public understand scientific discoveries and their impact on daily life. According to him, bridging the gap between research outputs and public awareness is essential to strengthening national health systems.
During his presentation, Fashola also highlighted the mission of the NIMR Foundation, noting that its work includes attracting funding, supporting research, and enhancing institutional development.
He said the Foundation is expected to serve as a major driver of sustainability, credibility, and accountability for NIMR.
He pointed out that NIMR’s research efforts have already improved many lives, citing examples such as the development of life-saving medicines, enhanced diagnostics, and simple interventions like corrective eyewear that have transformed quality of life for millions.

Fashola further noted that scientific breakthroughs from penicillin to modern biomedical innovations continue to shape global health outcomes, adding that Nigeria must not be left behind in supporting research with adequate funding and partnerships.
He emphasised that sustained collaboration between government, private organisations, and development partners is essential for NIMR to fully achieve its mandate.
According to him, advancing research into actionable policy is key to ensuring that discoveries translate into improved health for communities across the country.

Fashola wrapped up his remarks by calling for ongoing efforts to strengthen public understanding of science and health. He urged all stakeholders to work together to promote research literacy and ensure that NIMR’s impact is widely recognised and adequately supported.
