The Paediatric Department of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) has announced a temporary reduction in admissions into its Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for newborns and older children as it prepares to commence a fumigation and disinfection exercise aimed at strengthening infection prevention and control.
Eko Hot Blog reports that in a public notice signed by Dr. O. D. Babatunde, Paediatrician and Head of Clinical Services, the hospital disclosed that the exercise will begin on Thursday, July 9, 2026, starting with the third floor of the Mother and Child Centre (MCC).
According to the notice, the fumigation and disinfection of the third floor will last for one week, after which the exercise will continue on the fourth floor for an additional two days.
The management explained that, as a result of the exercise, admissions into the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit for both newborns and older children will be significantly reduced throughout the period.
The hospital noted that the exercise is in line with standard infection prevention and control practices required of healthcare facilities to ensure a safe environment for patients, caregivers, and healthcare workers.
The Paediatric Department appealed to members of the public for understanding and cooperation, assuring them that the temporary inconvenience is necessary to improve the quality and safety of healthcare services provided at the facility.
The management further expressed appreciation for the patience of patients and their families, reaffirming its commitment to delivering quality healthcare in a safe and hygienic environment.
