Suspected Mahmuda group members attacked Karongi town in Kwara State’s Baruten Local Government Area on Sunday morning, leaving a vigilante dead and several houses in ruins.
Eko Hot Blog reports that taking advantage of the absence of security forces who were away for Eid-el-Kabir festivities, the gunmen went unchallenged for hours until the arrival of reinforcements from a nearby community, including soldiers and vigilantes.

Umoru Sariki, Emir of Yashikira Emirate, confirmed the attack and reported significant property damage alongside the loss of life.
He further urged the Federal Government and military to prioritize the establishment of a permanent security station in Karongi or a neighboring town to prevent further attacks.

Although Kwara State Police spokesperson Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi initially had no knowledge of the incident, Lt. Stephen Nwankwo from the 22 Brigade of the Nigerian Army corroborated the attack, explaining that the deceased vigilante was assisting soldiers during their response.
