- Labour Unions Throw Weight Behind Hamzat’s 2027 Lagos Governorship Bid
- Hamzat’s candidacy has also received support from key figures within the party
- Political analysts say the endorsement by labour unions goes beyond symbolism
The Lagos chapters of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have officially backed Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat in his bid to become the next governor of the state in 2027.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the endorsement was announced during the 2026 World Labour Day celebration held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena. Leaders of both unions, including NLC chairperson Agnes Funmi Sessi and TUC leader Abiodun Aladetan, expressed confidence in Hamzat’s leadership and continuity agenda.

For years, organised labour in Lagos has maintained a close relationship with the All Progressives Congress (APC), often supporting the party and its predecessors during elections. This partnership has played a major role in shaping voting patterns across the state, especially at the grassroots level.

The latest move follows a similar pattern seen in past elections, where both unions supported the Sanwo-Olu/Hamzat ticket in 2019 and 2023. Their backing contributed to the APC’s continued dominance in Lagos politics, even amid growing opposition.
Hamzat’s candidacy has also received support from key figures within the party. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has publicly identified him as his preferred successor, describing the choice as a way to ensure continuity and sustained development in the state.
Other party leaders, including APC state chairman Cornelius Ojelabi and House of Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, have also shown support. Influential groups like the Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria have joined the growing list of backers.
Political analysts say the endorsement by labour unions goes beyond symbolism. With strong influence in sectors like transport, public service, and the informal economy, unions remain powerful mobilising forces capable of shaping election outcomes in Lagos.
Reacting to the support, Hamzat thanked the unions and other stakeholders, promising to build on the achievements of the current administration while promoting governance anchored on integrity, inclusiveness, and continuity.
