The Federal Government has clarified that it has no plans to increase taxes, stressing instead that efforts are focused on expanding the tax net and ensuring that eligible Nigerians fulfil their tax obligations.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, stated this on Thursday while receiving a delegation from the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) at his office in Abuja.

Oyedele commended the institute for introducing a National Tax Awareness Day and for supporting the Federal Government’s ongoing tax reform initiatives.
He urged the institute to intensify public sensitisation campaigns, noting that many Nigerians still perceive taxation as a mechanism for government to take money from citizens rather than a tool for national development.
According to him, the government’s priority is not to raise tax rates but to broaden the tax base by ensuring that all eligible taxpayers comply with their civic responsibilities.

“We are still not getting enough revenue from taxes,” he said.
“It is not about increasing taxes but making sure that those who are supposed to pay tax pay. We want to promote fairness in tax administration.”
Oyedele maintained that improving tax compliance and public understanding of taxation would help boost government revenue while creating a more equitable tax system for Nigerians.
