The Police Service Commission (PSC) has ordered the immediate retirement of all senior police officers who have served for more than 35 years or are older than 60.
This decision comes amid controversy over the continued stay of Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who recently turned 60.

Despite the order, the Nigeria Police Force and the Attorney General of the Federation insist that Egbetokun is legally allowed to remain in office.
PSC’s spokesperson, Ikechukwu Ani, explained in a statement on Friday that the commission has reversed its earlier policy from 2017, which allowed officers to calculate their retirement based on their enlistment date instead of their appointment date.
The commission now says this policy contradicts the Public Service Rules, which clearly state that officers must retire once they reach 35 years of service or 60 years of age.
“The PSC, in its first extraordinary meeting, approved the immediate retirement of senior police officers who have exceeded 35 years in service or are above 60 years old,” Ani said.
The commission reviewed its past decision and found that it went against public service regulations. The new directive has been sent to the Inspector General of Police for immediate enforcement.

Police Recruits
The meeting was led by PSC Chairman, retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, Hashimu Argungu, and attended by other top officials, including retired Justice Adamu Paul Galumje, retired DIG Taiwo Lakanu, and Chief Onyemuchi Nnamani.
