This update targets devices running outdated operating systems and will come into effect in two phases during 2025.
For those who cherish their decade-old smartphones and have kept them operational with careful maintenance, this change might be disheartening.
However, the number of affected users is expected to be small since most people upgrade their devices more frequently.
Android Compatibility Update: January 1, 2025
The first wave of updates will occur on January 1, 2025, when WhatsApp stops supporting Android KitKat (4.4) and older versions.
While some users can update their operating system to keep using the app, many older devices no longer receive official updates from manufacturers.
This leaves users with outdated hardware unable to install newer OS versions unless they resort to risky and warranty-voiding methods, such as custom ROM installations.
Here is a list of Android smartphones confirmed to lose WhatsApp support on January 1, 2025:
Samsung:
Galaxy S3
Galaxy Note 2
Galaxy Ace 3
Galaxy S4 Mini
Motorola:
Moto G (1st Gen)
Razr HD
Moto E 2014
HTC:
One X
One X+
Desire 500
Desire 601
LG:
Optimus G
Nexus 4
G2 Mini
L90
Sony:
Xperia Z
Xperia SP
Xperia T
Xperia V
Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, stated that these updates are part of regular efforts to ensure the app remains secure and optimized for newer devices.
iPhone Compatibility Update: May 5, 2025
Later in the year, iPhones running outdated iOS versions will also be affected. From May 5, WhatsApp will no longer support iOS versions earlier than 15.1. While most iPhones can be updated, certain older models like the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus are limited to iOS 12.5.7. These devices, which are still in use by some users, will lose access to both WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business.
Key Takeaways
If you’re using any of the listed Android or iPhone models, check if your device can be updated to a supported OS version.
If updating isn’t possible, consider upgrading to a newer smartphone to continue enjoying WhatsApp’s features and security.
